Euroopa Liidule oma merepäev – 20. mai

Enamik merendusega seotud inimesi teab, et Rahvusvaheline Mereorganisatsioon (IMO) peab igal aastal maailma merepäeva, mis toimub tavaliselt viimasel septembri nädalal. Täpne kuupäev on jäetud iga riigi enda otsustada. Eelmisel aastal tähistati maailma merepäeva 27. septembril. Üritus viidi läbi reisilaeval Galaxy ühendatuna merenduskonverentsiga. 2006. aastal toimus üritus 28. septembril hotellis Meriton Grand Hotel Tallinn.

Nüüd on Euroopa Liit otsustanud, et on aeg hakata ka EL'i merepäeva pidama. Selleks kuupäevaks on fikseeritud 20. mai. Eesmärgiks on teadvustada ookeanide, meremajanduse ja Euroopa merepärandi tähtsust. Sellele päevale on planeeritud erinevad üritused terves Liidus. Kindlasti ei jää ka Eesti sellest eemale ning hakkame ka meie nüüd kaks korda aastas merepäeva tähistama.

The aim of the European Maritime Day is to highlight the whole web of relationships that bind together all maritime and marine-related issues and activities in Europe, in line with the joined-up and cross-cutting approach of the new policy. The first European Maritime Day is planned for 20 May 2008.

The Commission encourages all the European regions, ports, cities and other maritime stakeholders to join in the celebrations and to work together so that the European Maritime Day can serve in the future as the focal date launching a 'maritime week' of conferences, festivities, networking, best practice exchange and benchmarking activities throughout the EU.

The Commission is also planning an annual 'open ports' day in the context of this maritime week.
