SOUTH Korean flag bulk carrier Bright Ruby (26,589 dwt, built 1987) has been seized by Somali pirates, with 21 seafarers on board, Lloyd's List can confirm.
News of the seizure broke this morning, but until now no positive identification of the vessel has been available.
There are also reports that a ransom of $1.4m is being demanded for two French nationals who were taken hostage in Somalia on board their yacht Carre D'as on September 3. They are being named as Jean-Yves Delanne and his wife Bernardette.
According to the Mombasa-based Seafarers' Assistance Programme, the kidnappers are also seeking the release of six fellow pirates seized in the area in April, during a helicopter raid by French commandos after another French yacht was hijacked.
Somali pirates have attacked over 30 vessels so far this year and are thought to be holding at least ten, including 130 seafarers.
