Maersk suurendas Hongkongi lipu all sõitvate laevade arvu 17-lt 39-le muutudes sellega suurimat laevastikku Hongkongi lipu all omavat firmaks. Peale 22 laeva üle viimist on laevastiku tonnaaž HK lipu all 2 miljonit GT.
Maersk Hong Kong tegevdirektor Dipak Dash põhjendab laevade üle viimist järgmiselt:
… one of the reasons for choosing Hong Kong was that ships flying the Bauhinia flag paid preferential dues at mainland ports.
He further stated that flagging the ships in Hong Kong will also give the company other financial and economic benefits including the ability to take advantage of the city’s low tax base and tax not being withheld on interest payments.
The 17 ships Maersk has on the Hong Kong register total about 770,000gt. They comprise seven large container ships varying between 6,700 teu and 8,600 teu and 10 feeder containerships of 1,100 teu-2,000 teu.
